“Richard. Richard Tanner!” A large African American woman strides into the office, holding a tie. “Where are you?”

Everyone looks up, puzzled. Who is this woman and why is she holding Richard’s tie. He pokes his head out of his office, and ducks back into it. But the woman has seen him and walks into his office, without closing the door.

“You think it’s okay to leave your tie in my living room?”

“Linda, I’m sorry, it was a mistake.”

“You’re a mistake. I never should have answered that ad. My boyfriend left me because of you.”

“I didn’t know you had a boyfriend.”

“Not anymore I don’t.” Linda throws Richard’s tie on the floor. “And don’t call me again.” Linda storms out of Richard’s office and looks at a shocked Mel. “What are you looking at?”

“Nothing.” Mel’s voice is a whisper as he turns back to his computer.

“Anyone else want to start something?”

Carmen shakes her head no. Kenneth hides behind his cubicle wall and William is nowhere to be found. Luckily Harold and Roger are out of the office, at a meeting, but Bonnie is there and walks up to Linda.

“Excuse me. This is a place of work so it’s best if you leave now.”

“I’m gone and that trash in there can stay away from me.” And with that, she slammed the door and left.

“Well, there you go.” Bonnie shrugged her shoulders and went back to her office, but not without glancing at Carmen. Carmen was looking at a spreadsheet and didn’t notice. She also didn’t notice the sad, remorseful look on Bonnie’s face.

After a moment Richard comes out of his office, face red. “I’m sorry everybody. She’s a crazy person. I mean, really, who comes into an office like that? And it isn’t even my tie. Crazy.” And he walks back inside. Carmen gets up and stops Richard from closing the door.

“Richard? I’m here if you want to talk or anything.”

“I’m fine.”

“Okay, I’m just saying if you want to talk, I’m here.”

Richard looks at Carmen for a moment. “Thanks.” And he closes the door to his office. Carmen walks back to her cubicle when Bonnie stops her.

“Meet me in the bathroom.”

“Bonnie, I don’t think I have to go and there really isn’t anything to say. I get it. This is your thing and I was just, I don’t even think it’s my thing, really. Besides Mel and I are having lunch today so, I think it’s best we just let it go.” Carmen sits down and puts on her Dictaphone headphones. “I have.” And that’s it. Bonnie stares at her for a moment and then walks on.

The door to the office opens and an imposing Harold walks in, followed by Roger, followed by Roger’s 10 year-old son, Jason. Jason has a massive green cast on his arm and a sling around his shoulder holding it up.

“Carmen we need lunch. For the boy, too.”

“Yes Mr. Carlson. I’ll bring you some menu options.”

Harold turns to Roger and Jason. “Chinese good for you guys?”

“I want pizza.” Jason smiles at an unimpressed Harold.
